2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Places Third in 2015 Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car | Luther Brookdale Mazda

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata placed third in Motor Trend’s 2015 Best Driver’s Car competition.

The 2015 Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car competition has been held. 10 cars were driven, tested and rated based on the perfect driver’s car recipe.

The new Miata placed right behind the Porsche Cayman GT4 and the Mercedes-AMG GT S.

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata wasn’t the fastest car at the competition. In fact, it had the smallest engine, lowest horsepower and it was the only convertible. According to editor-and-chief, Edward Loh, it’s small engine doesn’t take away from the driving experience.

“It’s slow but that doesn’t mean it’s not a lot of fun out here,” said Loh during the initial test drive down Highway 198. “This chassis is so poised, so completely balanced that I can just chuck it into corners,” he said. “Man this thing is awesome”

All 10 of the vehicles were taken for a spin around the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca by professional race car driver, Randy Pobst.

“The impression I have is softness,” said Pobst. “Great shifter. Quick and fast. The Miata is defined by its lightness very much in the traditional sports car sense.”

Lots of data is recorded, then the team argues for their favorite car to be the winner. There are three key ingredients that are essential for the perfect Driver’s Car. They are: three-wheel drive, stick shift transmission, and a light weight body.

In the end the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata took home 3rd place. Motor trend commended the MX-5 by saying it is “proof you don’t need a lot of power to make a great driver’s car.”
